President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said he feels that he has governed well, and that he has done nothing that he cannot be accountable for within the last five years.

Speaking to the media for the first time after the defeat in the election held on Saturday, president Solih said that despite the 25 years of political experience he had accumulated before he became president, he had faced new experiences during the last five years.

One of the things the president Solih highlighted in this regard was the efforts required to maintain a government with a coalition that had marked differences in opinions. He said that this was a difficult task and that he moved ahead because he believed in running a government that included many people.

The President noted that the development projects and other work done for the people during his presidency was a positive outcome from running a government that involved many people.

"I would like to note that I was able to govern well. I was able to establish peace and stability in the Maldives." -- President Solih.

"It is probably a bit early to order my list of achievements during the last five years. The people will be the judge of this," said president Solih.

"However, I do note that I was able to govern well. I was able to establish peace and stability in the Maldives."

President Solih highlighted the free degree program for those who were in need of higher education, establishment of essential services, and the efforts to combat the Covid 19 pandemic as some of the successes of his government.

Responding to questions asked by journalists, the president gave assurance that had not done anything he cannot be accountable for within the last five years.

"I am ready to answer for each and every thing. There is no issue that can be raised about me. I am stating this very clearly. I can face any situation. I have no concerns. I have not done anything for which I cannot be held accountable," said President Solih.

The President said that he felt happy that he had been able to govern well. He said he can foresee a day when the people would talk about it. President Solih said he had however accepted the decision of the people in the election, and the government had already started making arrangements for the transition of power.

Highlighting that a strong responsible opposition party is important for the Maldives, president Solih said he would keep working with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to promote democracy in the country.
