The Criminal Court today denied releasing his passport to Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Bassam Adeel Jaleel, who has been charged with fraud and money laundering, despite his request to travel to Qatar for an Asian Football Confederation (AFC) meeting.

Charges of fraud and money laundering has been filed against Bassam for allegedly embezzling money owed to FAM. His passport has been withheld since the start of the investigation.

The Prosecutor General's (PG) Office said the state refused to release Bassam's passport upon his request based on an invitation he received to attend an AFC meeting in Qatar on Friday.

Bassam's lawyer requested for his passport to be returned from tomorrow until next Monday.

The PG Office said there was the opportunity for another FAM representative to attend the meeting, and the AFC, the Sports Commissioner, and the FAM had not officially requested to issue Bassam's passport.

According to the PG Office, the court, in light of the submissions made by Bassam and the state, ruled not to issue Bassam's passport.

Last year, the police raided FAM House in connection with funds owed to FAM and confiscated some documents from the premise.
