JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) sent five Maldivians to participate in its 'Knowledge Co-Creation Program (Young Leaders)' in the field of Rural Development.
Conducted under a technical cooperation scheme from the Japanese government, the program aims to promote human resource development in developing countries.
Under the program, young leaders that are intended to become nation-building leaders in the future are invited to Japan for an 18-day period. Throughout their stay, they will be provided with opportunities to develop respective specialities by experiencing or learning skills and technologies. Participants are also encouraged to take initiative and resolve issues on their own.
The five Maldivian participants, selected by government organizations from several islands, will recieve basic knowledge of overall policies, administrative systems, activities by farmers groups and the history of Agriculture and Rural Development in Japan. Notably they will also be briefed on ideas for the effective implementation of policies aimed to improve rural development systems in Maldives.
Observation and discussions are based on the following topics:
- Problems and challenges of vegetable cultivation on islands.
- Hydroponic Cultivation of Vegetables (Plant Factory).
- Fish distribution market (Nakaminato Fish Market).
- Practice of the sixth industry.
- One Village One Product movement and Roadside station.
- Agritourism development.
- Women’s role and gender issues in rural development.
Furthermore, the participants will formulate and present a proposal or action plan to their organization to improve rural development in Maldives.
