Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) launched an investigation into the death of a woman detained at Dhoonidhoo Detention Centre.
HRCM announced the probe in a tweet late Tuesday.
Maldives Police Service stated that the 23-year-old woman was arrested on theft charges, and had been accorded all rights during her incarceration. Police added that they had provided her with doctor consultations twice as well.
Police had requested HRCM and the National Integrity Commission to look into the case. The service has also requested permission from the woman's family to conduct a post-mortem examination.
Several concerns have been raised regarding deaths of detainees under state custody, with some families accusing authorities of neglecting to provide sufficient care and medical treatment.
