Japan to grant USD 4.6 mln to Maldives to combat terrorism

The government of Japan on Monday signed Exchange of Notes with Maldives to extend a grant of 500 million Japanese Yen (USD 4.6 million) to the archipelago.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Exchange of Notes was signed between Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and the Ambassador of Japan to Maldives, Yanai Keiko.

The ministry elaborated that the 500 million Yen grant, which aims to further promote the economic and social development of Maldives, will be utilised towards countering terrorism.

Foreign Minister Shahid is accompanying President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his ongoing official visit to Japan from October 20-27, to attend the Enthronement Ceremony of Emperor Naruhito.
