Local multi-disciplinary firm 'Izu Consultancy and Training' is introducing the elderly-focused sporting programme 'Ground Golf'.

Ground Golf programme is to take place in capital Male' City and reclaimed suburb Hulhumale', with the cooperation of the Japanese Embassy, Ministry of Gender, Family and Social Services, and Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment.

A local NGO ‘Dhivehiraajjeyge Israhvehinge Jamuiyyaa’ (DIJ) will also be working with Izu Consultancy and Training. Volunteer experts from Yurihama-cho, a town in the prefecture of Tottori in Japan, will visit Maldives from July 12- 14, 2019.

During their visit, Yurihama-cho volunteers will visit certain islands to demonstrate and teach the rules of Ground Golf.

The official launch is scheduled to take place at 1600 hours at Henveiru stadium on Friday. Moreover, the Japanese experts are further set to call on the Sports Ministry and the Deputy Mayor of Male' City Council, and meet with the Elderly Association of Maldives and on July 14.

They are set to depart from Maldives on July 15.

The initiative aims to promote healthy lifestyles for the elder generation by introducing the modern recreational activity. Gaining traction since its inception in Tottori Prefecture, Japan, in 1982, the sport has gained popularity because of its simplicity, low cost in terms of necessary equipment, and requirement of a small area.

The outdoor activity is inclusive of males and females and can incorporate the entire family.

The planned outcome of the project is to engage the elderly community in an enjoyable physical activity that is simple but competitive. The programme aims to train 15-20 senior citizens to play Ground Golf and provide them with necessary equipment.

It is further intended for the sport to be initiated in other islands and become a competitive sport for senior citizens in the country, to improve their health and wellbeing.
