The government of Japan, on Monday, provided a grant to upgrade Bodufolhudhoo Health Center in Alifu Alifu Atoll, under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) scheme.

The grant contract was signed between Japanese Ambassador Keiko Yanai and President of the Association for Awareness, Recreation and Unity (AARU), Adam Riyaz during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health.

The grant, which amounts to approximately MVR 1,806,915 (USD 117,180) will fund the provision of 31 pieces of medical equipment for laboratory usage and obstetric procedures, three beds for in-house patients and finance the construction of a labour room and a laboratory in Bodufolhudhoo Health Center.

With the implementation of the project, the Health Center will have the capacity to provide comprehensive primary care, as well as services related to maternity, infant care and laboratory for the residents of Bodufolhudhoo and neighbouring islands.

Overall, the project is intended to complement ongoing government efforts to improve the health services across Maldives and empower local NGO’s with regard to sustaining community development.

The project will be implemented by AARU, the first community based NGO established in the Bodufolhudhoo, in collaboration with the Bodufolhudhoo Island Council and Health Ministry.

The GGP is part of the Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA), which is implemented by the Japanese Embassy in Maldives to empower people at the grassroots level.

Since 1996, the GGP has been implemented in fields including education, environment, health, transportation and energy as part of efforts to contribute to the sustainable development of Maldives.
