Prison officers have officially commenced the use of body-worn cameras.

The officers of the Maldives Correctional Service had been using body-worn cameras on a trial basis since August of last year.

According to the Correctional Services, the use of body-worn cameras is expected to enhance the responsibility and accountability of officers, strengthening the overall operations of prisons.

Advantages of body worn cameras

- Officers will be actively engaged on the front line in overseeing inmates

- Understand the behavior and conduct of inmates

- Acquire evidence and testimony related to incidents that happen in prison

- Gather information required for rehabilitation mechanisms

The Maldives Correctional Services have stated that the cameras will be used in all interactions with inmates. Additionally, the institution said that the cameras will be utilized for live streaming when transporting inmates with a high-security risk between different locations.

A total of 51 cameras will be deployed for use by prison officers starting Tuesday, September 5.

The police initiated the use of body-worn cameras last year, employing them during protests and significant operations. The Maldives Police Service has recently announced their intention to utilize body-worn cameras during the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for September 9.
