The Presidential Jetty; Izzudheen Faalan, or more commonly known as Jetty No. 1 in Male' is being renovated by MTCC to replace the damaged roof caused due to poor maintenance. The project is valued at over MVR 11.7 million.
The Presidential Jetty; Izzudheen Faalan, or more commonly known as Jetty No. 1 in Male' City will undergo major renovations costing MVR 11.7 million (USD 758,450), according to Maldives Transport and Construction Company (MTCC).
MTCC, the company which initially built the jetty has recently closed off the jetty area from the public this week, with a poster on display indicating the renovation activities to take place there.
"Izzudheen Jetty development project" the poster reads, detailing that the total project value is MVR 11,705,704.20 and that the project was contracted to the company by the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure on a design and build basis.
The poster also included an illustration believed to be the new design of the jetty. It depicts a standard roof, likely replacing the white sail-like roof of the jetty, which resembles the sails of Maldives' traditional boat 'Dhoani'. This design brings the jetty closer to its original appearance.
Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdulla Mutthalib, speaking with 'Mihaaru News', said that the renovation is warranted due to poor maintenance which has led to severe damages. However, the renovations will only be done on the upper portion of the jetty, he said.
"We will renovate and make changes to the upper structure of the jetty while keeping the foundation intact. The columns supporting the jetty underneath will also remain unchanged. The current construction of the jetty has made maintenance challenging, particularly due to poor maintenance over the past five years, leading to rusting of the metal," the Minister said.
He said that the jetty's roof is now in a state where it may fall, "which is why such a big renovation is needed."
Speaking to 'Mihaaru News', an MTCC official also confirmed the Minister's statements, adding that part of the jetty is severely damaged due to lack of maintenance, and other areas also require renovations.
MTCC is yet to announce when the jetty will be reopened following renovations.
The jetty has undergone repairs twice since it first initially opened. The jetty was last repaired in 2017.
The official jetty's most major renovation took place in 2015 during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration, on the occasion of the 50th Independence Day of the Maldives.
The renovated jetty was renamed 'Izzudheen Faalan' and was inaugurated on July 26, 2015.
