Prosecutor General's Office has decided to move forward with appealing one of the two individuals who were acquitted in the case of the 119 kilograms of drugs seized in Malé City in 2021.

The drugs were seized from a taxi during a special operation by the Maldives Police Service. Prosecutors have charged Ali Zubair from Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Hoadedhhoo, as well as Ahmed Sunain and Ahmed Mujahidh, who are also from the same island.

Last March, Criminal Court ruled that both Sunain and Mujahid were not guilty, while Zubair was found guilty of the charges raised against him.

Prosecutor General's Office stated that after reviewing the case, they will proceed with appealing Sunain's part of the case. They detailed that they had decided against appealing Mujahid's case because they do not anticipate winning the case in the High Court.

Upon the initial verdict of the Criminal Court, the Police expressed concerns over both Sunain and Mujahid being released. At that time, the court ruled that both the Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusan, as well as senior Police officials were in contempt of court.

While Sunain's case is set to be appealed at the High Court, another drug case he is involved in is also currently being appealed at the High Court, with hearings already in progress.
