Parliament has scheduled an extraordinary sitting for Wednesday to appoint a new Prosecutor General.

Hussain Shameem resigned from his post as Prosecutor General on August 22.

Ibrahim Falah, Parliamentary Group Leader of People's National Congress (PNC), which holds a super majority in parliament, confirmed to Mihaaru News that they will be holding an extraordinary sitting on Wednesday.

As per the law, the deadline for appointing a new Prosecutor General will be reached on September 21. Due to this, an extraordinary sitting has been planned to conclude the appointment ahead of the deadline, Falah said.

"Two sittings will be held. One is now scheduled for Wednesday," he said.

At the last parliament sitting, Deputy Speaker Ahmed Nazim announced that two extraordinary sittings will be held to carry out the procedures for the appointment of a Prosecutor General. One will be to announce in Parliament the names nominated by the President, and the following sitting will be to vote once the committee comes to a decision.

At the time of Shameem's resignation, Parliament had said that they had not received the resignation letter and proceeded to hold a sitting where they dismissed him. Although Parliament said this had been done due to not receiving the resignation letter, Shameem maintains that the letter had been sent ahead of the sitting.

President's Office later announced for applications to the post of Prosecutor General, the deadline for which is 12:00hrs on Wednesday.

With this in consideration, it is believed that the parliament sitting will be held on Wednesday evening.
