On May 1, 2022, under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, the salaries of all employees in the education sector were raised, and the pay structure was altered. This led to an increase in teachers' salaries.
However, the changes also resulted in the deduction of certain allowances, which has sparked a rise in complaints. A significant concern has been the reduction in the allowance for teachers and principals who relocate to island communities.
During an interview with 'Mihaaru' last week, when asked about this allowance, the Minister explained that there is a specific policy guiding the state's pay harmonization and that these allowances are now being addressed through the Pay Commission.
The Minister also mentioned that the previous administration had increased salaries in the health sector, but there have been similar challenges in receiving allowances.
"When changes occur without a rural allowance, or a compensatory allowance for essential state services, there needs to be a consistent policy. Otherwise, it will not be sustainable," the Minister remarked.
"We are currently evaluating what kinds of changes and amendments should be proposed to the existing pay framework and what adjustments are necessary."
The Minister emphasized that any sudden changes would not be sustainable and that modifications will be made after thoroughly reviewing the current structure.
