The ferry terminals and stops of 21 islands in the northern atolls have been transferred to the Ministry of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works and handed over to local councils.

The agreement was signed in a ceremony yesterday between the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the Ministry of Local Government, and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

Speaking at the event, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen stated that the power to manage all ferry stops in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, and Shaviyani atolls would now be handed over to the councils through the Local Governance Ministry.

He said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu made this decision as part of his commitment to decentralization, enabling councils to provide direct and efficient services to the people.

Minister Ameen said that although ferry stops were built at significant expense, services have not always been the best. He expressed confidence that councils would now be able to manage and enhance these services more effectively.

Additionally, he highlighted ongoing efforts to expand RTL ferry services across the country. However, given the high operational costs of the service, the government is reviewing and adjusting the ferry service model to ensure long-term sustainability.

Changes will be made to some existing routes, while new routes will be introduced, and others reduced where necessary.

Local Governance Minister Adam Shareef Umar also spoke at the event, stating that the decision aligns with President Muizzu’s policy to strengthen decentralization.

He noted that councils had requested this transition, and the government is working to complete all necessary procedures within the next three months. The agreements will be finalized after consultation with the Attorney General’s Office.
