Police earlier stopped releasing identification details of arrestees, but resumed doing so only recently. Before that, Police only disclosed photos and details of arrestees, even that in selected cases, after the cases had been sent to the Prosecutor General to press charges.
However, in the past weeks, Police have publicly shared photos and details of suspects in a prostitution network at a Hiyaa Flat in Hulhumale', as well as those involved in an accident involving a sports car in Hulhumale'. Earlier today, they have released the photos and details of three suspects arrested for alcohol possession and sale in Vaavu atoll BoduMohoraa.
Police Spokesperson and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ahmed Shifan said today that Police have now begun to release details of suspects arrested in cases besides those related to crimes involving children. He did not elaborate on reasons behind this decision.
There is no standard guidelines within which Police have to act in releasing these details. Shifan said that the details are disclosed as far as possible so as not to obstruct their investigations.
