Minister of Tourism Ali Waheed, on Wednesday, revealed that requests to extend the periods allocated for resort development in 21 islands were lodged at the ministry.

Speaking at a press conference, Minister Waheed stated that construction work remained halted at 70 islands which were leased for resort development.

The minister said that the extension requests would be processed and that a certain decision would be reached.

Furthermore, he noted that a study would be conducted regarding the remaining islands before proceeding in accordance with established laws.

The minister previously stated that development efforts at some of the islands had remained halted for more than 10 years.

He assured that the incumbent government would not permit leased islands to remain idle and that legally feasible steps would be taken in the future.

There are currently 150 resorts operating in Maldives while 140 more are being developed.
