Vice President Faisal Naseem on Saturday stated that the current administration's decentralisation policy is aimed at equipping local councils with necessary tools to become more effective in service delivery.

He made these remarks while speaking at the ‘Thila Uthuru Uhthama Aruthaveringe Awards’ ceremony held in Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alif Atoll.

According to VP Naseem, by granting more political and economic power to the local councils, the administration seeks to promote citizen participation. Hence, councils can become more responsive to the requirements of people.

He also spoke about the dire status of councils over the past years and assured that the future is bright for councils with the amendments planned by the government for the Decentralisation Act.

Some of these amendments include granting councils the financial and legal autonomy necessary for regional development.

Speaking about the ‘Thila Uthuru Uhthama Aruthaveringe Awards,’ the Vice President paid homage to the contributions of some of the iconic forefathers originating from Haa Alif Atoll. Furthermore, he noted the importance of commemorating the achievements of creative, innovative, and productive citizens.

The awards is an initiative of the Haa Alif Atoll Council to celebrate the achievements and contributions of local councils, students, individual citizens, associations, companies and resorts for the betterment of the community and elevation of the atoll's status.

Vice President Naseem visited Dhidhdhoo as part of his ongoing visit to Haa Alif and Haa Dhaalu.

In his visit to Dhidhdhoo, VP Naseem met with island and atoll councillors, who shared urgent issues and various concerns faced by the constituency. Discussions were held on ways to bring further development to various parts of the atoll as well.

During the meeting, the VP noted that once the Decentralisation Act is fully implemented, roles and responsibilities of the councillors would greatly increase, and budgetary changes would help address concerns. He also assured that he would work towards remedying the issues raised by the councillors.

Moreover, the VP inquired into the latest updates on some of the developmental plans for Dhidhdhoo.
