Ministry of Finance on Wednesday revealed that the state will lease the lounge space of Velana International Airport (VIA)'s seaplane terminal currently being developed by Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL).

According to the ministry, lounge space from the new seaplane terminal will be leased to both Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) and Manta Air for a period of two years. Both these companies will receive the same amount of space they are currently renting at VIA's lounge for the same rate.

The ministry stated that MACL will contract out the remaining lounge space based on demand, through a tender process.

Moreover, the ministry assured that arrangements will be made for Island Aviation Services to continue using their current space at the seaplane terminal in the future as well.

It also said that a plan will be drafted for MACL to carry out the seaplane terminal's operations for two years with the full confidence of the aviation industry.

The development of the terminal, spanning 7,000 square meters, is of high-priority and part of the broader plans to develop Velana International airport (VIA). A scheduled runway project will commence once the old seaplane terminal is vacated and cleared. It will take an estimated period of five months to transfer all services provided at the old terminal to the new facility.
