Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced that Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) centres will be established countrywide, offering multiple courses, within the next two years.

The Islamic Centre established in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo has been handed over to IUM on Tuesday. IUM will conduct courses there and provide services to the southern atolls.

Minister Shaheem said that the courses at IUM offered distinctive advantages, and immensely differed from undergoing a course at other establishments. He said the courses are designed to mould persons in specific ways.

The minister said that for these reasons, it is one of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's primary focuses to ensure the development and expansion of IUM.

The Minister stated that it is important to establish an IUM centre in every inhabited island of the Maldives. Currently, IUM centres have been established in Male', Fuvahmulah, Naifaru and now Thinadhoo.

Shaheem shared plans to establish IUM centres in the near future in Raa Atoll Ungoofaaru, Hithadhoo and Dhihdhoo.

"In the next two years, IUM centres will be established around the country," Shaheem said.

Shaheem said that while expanding services of IUM, a special focus will also be on developing staff capacity. To achieve this, a number of international scholarships will be provided each year.

Shaheem urged IUM to exert special efforts towards publishing books, translations, and conducting researches.

IUM currently offers a wide variety of courses including Quran and Arabic, teaching, shariah and law, as well as financial banking.
