STELCO has started renovation of the fish pond under the minaret at Islamic Centre under the company's CRS initiatives.
Ministry of Islamic Affairs decided to renovate the fish pond on occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Islamic Centre. Initially, the Ministry announced seeking contractors for the project, but later retracted the decision following public criticism saying that is is an unnecessary expense during this time of financial difficulties for the State.
STELCO, however, has decided to repair the fish pond through their CSR initiatives as the base of the minaret now stands damaged and old.
Ministry of Islamic Affairs said that the company had expressed interest in the renovation in a meeting held between Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy.
In a post on social media platform X, Fahmy said that the company decided to undertake the renovation of the fish pond to restore the beauty of the landmark and to preserve its historical and cultural significance.
The Islamic Centre was first opened in November, 1984 by then President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
