Pres Solih presents Order of the rule of Izzudeen to PM Modi

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih presented the Order of the distinguished rule of Izzudeen to Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Saturday evening.

The ceremony for this event was held at the President’s Office, as part of the Prime Minister’s State Visit.

According to the President's Office, PM Modi was presented the title in recognition of the many services he has performed to cement the longstanding diplomatic relations between India and Maldives.

Moreover, the notable assistance that the Indian government has continued to provide the Maldives under the Prime Minister’s stewardship is a factor earning him the title as well.

During the ceremony held to confer Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the Order of the rule of Izzudeen.

Prior to this the Order of the rule of Izzudeen was presented to various notable leaders. The title was first conferred to the husband of Queen Elizabeth the Second and Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip and his uncle Earl Mountbatten on March 15, 1972.

During former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's rule, the same title was presented to South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan on October 30, 1984 and Commonwealth's Secretary General Shridath Ramphal on November 16, 1989.

On December 2, 2009, former President Mohamed Nasheed conferred this title to Saudi Arabian Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al Saud.

Before PM Modi, the Order of the rule of Izzudeen was most recently presented to Palestine's President Dr Mahmoud Abbas in 2013 during former President Mohamed Waheed's government.

During his state visit to Maldives, PM Modi held official talks with President Solih and signed six agreements in five sectors.

Moreover, the Prime Minister will also attend a parliament sitting and deliver his special address before participating in a banquet hosted by the president and first lady.

Before he departs early Sunday, PM Modi will call on various top government officials and politicians, including Vice President Faisal Naseem, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, and Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim.
