President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Saturday announced that Maldives was officially selected to host the 11th Indian Ocean Island Games in 2023.
Maldives was a founding member and has participated in all 10 editions of IOIG.
In his tweet announcing the news, President Solih stated “that it is fitting that we return the hospitality and extended to us by our fellow island nations.”
While Reunion, Mauritius and Seychelles voted for Maldives, both Madagascar and Comoros voted for themselves.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid also tweeted the news, and welcomed all the countries to Maldives.
“Warmest welcome to our sisters & brothers from Seychelles, Mauritus,Madagascar, Comoros, Réunion & Mayotte to our shores!”
