Maldivian youth team to compete with Sri Lanka in semifinals without securing a single win

Maldivian youth team competing in the ongoing CAVA Women’s U20 Championship has travelled to the semifinals without securing a single set in three matches after losing three sets to Nepal in their last match of the league round.

Maldivian youth team competing in the ongoing CAVA Women’s U20 Championship has travelled to the semifinals without securing a single set in three matches after losing three sets, including to Nepal in their last match of the league round.

Nepal had won their match against Maldives which took place at the Social Centre located in Maldives' capital, Male' City on Saturday evening after securing three straight sets of 25-16, 25-9, 25-10.

Although their performance saw notable improvement in the last set, Maldives also lost their first match of the Championships against Kyrgyzstan on Thursday without securing a single set, ending the match with scores of 25-11, 25-11, 25-17. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka also defeated Maldives in the second match of the tournament held on Friday, scoring sets of 25-8, 25-9, 25-16.

Under the guidance of Coach Fathuhulla Waheed (Fallo), Maldives' team is the youngest to compete in the tournament, with the squad's average age being 17 years. The most experienced player on the team is Maya Hussain Solah, who has been a member of the senior team since 2023.

The team that ranked first in the league round was Sri Lanka, who defeated Kyrgyzstan 3-2 in a game that was extended to five sets. The match ended with scores of 25-16, 19-25, 24-26, 25-17 and 15-10.

Sri Lanka had triumphed all three of their matches in this tournament. Meanwhile, Kyrgyzstan, after winning two out of three matches has been ranked in second place.

Nepal, who defeated Maldives has been ranked third in the tournament. In addition to the three sets they had claimed against Maldives, Nepal had also achieved a set against Sri Lanka.

While matches of the semifinals are scheduled to commence tomorrow, Maldives will rise against Sri Lanka for a rematch at 16:00 hrs while Kyrgyzstan is set to face off against Nepal at 20:00 hrs.

While the losing two teams of the semifinals are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to determine the third ranking champion, the finals are slated for Tuesday night.
