Practical work to establish the main transfer pump station required to connect water networks of Maldivian capital, Male' City and neighboring Hulhumale' has begun.

This station is being established for the purpose of tackling potential water shortages or crises that may arise in both Hulhumale' and Male'.

The transfer pump station set to be installed in Male' will be linked to the pipeline installed on the Sinamale' bridge which connects Male', Hulhule' and Hulhumale'.

Managing Director of Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Abdul Matheen Mohamed said that a pipeline was established during the construction of Sinamale' bridge in order to facilitate establishment of a transfer pump station between Male' and Hulhumale'. However, the work was suspended at the time, said the MD.

"Establishing a transfer pump and connecting Male' and Hulhumale' through a water network is highly important work for the people's water security. This government has now allocated the land required for this pump station after it [the work] was interrupted due to several administrative difficulties. The work begun here today will be concluded within the year and efforts to connect it with the pipe on the bridge will be commenced," Matheen elaborated.

He disclosed that this network possesses the capacity to provide 800 tons of water per hour should the need to supply water through the network between the islands arise. He further ascertained that water security will be ensured for both Male' and Hulhumale' with the establishment of the transfer station as well.

"After this project is completed, essential water can be provided, whether it be due to discontinuation of water supply for maintenance or a water disaster," said Matheen.

He assured that the company is expending several efforts to ensure water security across the nation.

Within this, a decision has been reached to work towards strengthening water production capacity as Male' City is presently limited to producing water solely to the amount it uses, said Matheen. He added that work to establish a large facility equipped with the means to store twice the amount of water and a sufficient infrastructure for water security is also currently ongoing.
