Maldives on Monday strongly condemned the attempted aerial attack targeted towards Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, this past weekend.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Maldivian government slammed the act, declaring that in addition to targeting civilian areas, it also threatened the security of the kingdom as well as the stability of the region.

Stating that the continuous attacks towards Saudi Arabia negatively impacted efforts toward finding a peaceful solution to the conflicts in the region, Maldives reiterated its solidarity with the people and government of the kingdom and "steadfast commitment to the fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations".

Saudi Arabian media reported that an apparent missile or drone was intercepted over Riyadh on Saturday, by the Saudi-led coalition that backs Yemen's internationally-recognised government against the Houthi rebel group.

Although the coalition did not divulge details, Saudi media claimed that the target was fired by Houthis in Yemen. The rebel group did not comment on the media reports.

Saudi Arabia has come repeatedly under attack from Houthis ever since the kingdom intervened in the Yemeni civil war in 2015. The death toll due to the conflict in Yemen has risen to 233,000 thus far, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
