The government has decided to hold the official opening of the Dharumavantha Hospital this month, five years after the structure was completed and operations commenced.

The 25 storey hospital built during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen will be officially inaugurated after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's upcoming trip to Azerbaijan for the COP summit, Mihaaru News reports.

Previously, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) led administration had also set a number of dates for the official launch of the hospital, although it was not carried through.

As MDP, when in the opposition at the time of the construction of the hospital, had levied allegations of corruption in building of the structure, the hospital had ultimately been put into use without the holding of an official opening ceremony.

Although construction of the hospital had been an initiative of former President Yameen, it had only been completed to a level of use during the following administration led by MDP.

The government, meanwhile, has not officially commented on the opening of Dharumavantha Hospital. However, the entire building is now being utilized, and preparations are underway for its official opening on November 17.

In a press conference held by Male' Group of Hospitals last month, CEO Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem said that despite Dharumavantha Hospital having been in operation for some years, the building has not, so far, been used to its capacity.

He said that it is a high priority of the government to bring Dharumavantha Hospital to full functionality within the year.
