The government of Maldives is compiling a special allowance policy for healthcare professionals.

Communications Undersecretary at the President's Office, Mabrouq Abdul Azeez, made the announcement late Tuesday at National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC)'s daily press conference on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Highlighting the heavy responsibilities and working shifts of healthcare workers, he stated that the authorities will complete the allowance policy and disclose its details at the earliest.

He further assured that healthcare professionals will duly receive renumeration for overtime work.

Mabrouq also noted that with the shutdown of all government offices and educational institutions during the ongoing state of public health emergency, most state employees are currently working from home if necessary. Some institutions are also sending in the minimum number of staff to office to provide necessary services to the public.

The government recently declared that all civil servants who are mandated to work during the public health emergency must be paid their overtime allowances, as per state policy.

Meanwhile, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also assured earlier that the administration will provide special support and aid for the healthcare professionals working on the frontlines to combat the spread of COVID-19.

Maldives now has 21 confirmed and five active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 16 recoveries.

The World Health Organization has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over two million people and claimed over 126,700 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 484,500 people have recovered.
