In the match played at Dhashrath Stadium yesterday, Sri Lanka's Imesha Wanakulauriya scored the sole match with a head shot at the 16th minute. She also won the player of the match title, and had earlier served as Captain in the country's Under 14 and Under 19 teams. This is her first appearance on the national team squad.
Maldives' team played well in defence, with experienced goal keeper Aiminath Leeza (Lizzy) deserving high praise.
In yesterday's match of the other two teams in Group B, Nepal and Bhutan ended the match with a 0-0 tie.
In the second match of Group B, Maldives will face off against Nepal on Monday. Nepal has played in the finals of the last six tournaments.
Group A has India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, with India winning the first match against Pakistan with a score of 2-5.
The reigning champions are Bangladesh, with India having won the previous five tournaments.
