Eighteen islands in Maldives are under monitoring due to community spread of COVID-19 present within its population.

Travel to and out of the islands under monitoring by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) are prohibited unless it is for an essential reason.

The statistics released on Saturday show that this was a decrease from the previous week, where 23 islands were being monitored.

The island that has been under monitoring for the longest time was Raa Dhuvaafaru. The island was put under monitoring on May 25. Non-essential travel from Dhuvaafaru has been barred for the past three months.

Twelve of the islands were put on the list in August. So far five islands have been put under monitoring in September.

Restrictions placed on islands to control the spread of the coronavirus are eased once a certain percentage of its eligible population have been vaccinated against the virus.

While the COVID cases in the Greater Male' Area appear to be largely controlled, the cases are still increasing in islands all over the nation.

As of Saturday evening, there has been 82,684 confirmed cases of COVID in Maldives. Currently there were 2,070 active cases.
