Emergency motion submitted to the Parliament on Monday calling to ban Israeli tourists to Maldives.
The motion submitted by opposition party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) member, Representative of Naifaru constituencey Ahmed Shiyam also called for harsher action to be taken against Israel until they stop the attacks against Palestine.
Israel, recently had increased the violent attacks on Gaza, Palestine. In the targeted airstrikes, over 140 Palestinians have lost their lives while 900 people have been injured. Women and children include in the causalities.
In Shiyam's motion, he proposed to ban imports of Israeli products until the attacks against Palestine is stopped. He also suggested researching and implementing other restrictive measures.
Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail responded to the calls on banning Israeli products. In his response, he noted that importing Israeli products to Maldives was banned in 2014.
Furthermore, Fayyaz stated that only special medical equipment can be imported, and that also requires special permission.
The motion was submitted since Israel has been evicting Palestinians out of their own homes in Sheikh Jarrah. Palestinians have been calling the evictions unconstitutional and protesting for their right to survive.
On May 11, President of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih called the forceful evictions of Palestinians violating the international law.
"By forcefully evicting Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah, and escalating attacks on Muslims offering prayers in the Al Aqsa complex, Israel continues to violate international law. Maldives condemns Israel's actions and remains in solidarity with the Palestinian people," he said via twitter.
Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has also condemned Israeli attacks on Sunday and has said Maldives will always advocate for Palestine's right to be a free nation.
In a meeting by Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Shahid said the fight to get independence for the people of Palestine has been ongoing for many years, and they worry how long it will go on for. He noted that Palestinians spent the Ramadan and Fitr Eid in fear of attack and that these were not acceptable.
In the OIC meeting, member nations decided to release a statement condemning Israel's action and to call for the violence against Palestinians to stop.
