Maldives doubles insurance for top state officials

Parliament on Tuesday passed to nearly double the insurance package of top state officials including ministers, judges and lawmakers.

The increased package was passed with 46 lawmakers voting in favour out of the 62 present during Tuesday's sitting.

The parliamentary finance committee had earlier proposed to increase the premium which covers healthcare from most ASEAN countries in addition neighbouring India and Sri Lanka.

The premium on corporate platinum package given to cabinet ministers was increased from MVR12,500 to MVR19,000 which boosts the limit from MVR300,000 to MVR350,000.

For parliament speaker, vice speaker, lawmakers and judges, the premium was raised from MVR12,500 to MVR24,000 which would raise the limit from MVR300,000 to MVR350,000.

The enhanced package would also benefit magistrates, governor, prosecutor general, heads and members of state institutions.
