Minister of Communication, Science and Technology Mohamed Maleeh Jamal on Monday night announced plans to develop a technology park at the heart of Fuvahmulah City.
Minister Maleeh stated that Fuvahmulah City, which is noted for its innovative youth, would be developed as 'the Silicon Valley of Maldives'.
Located in the San Francisco Bay Area of California in the United States of America, Silicon Valley is known as a global centre for high technology, innovation and social media.
The Fuvahmulah Technology Park is intended to function as a hub for technological advancement in Maldives by "providing high tech office space for remote working, Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs), micro enterprises, start-ups, higher education or training campuses as well as incubation and entrepreneurship development facilities", said Minister Maleeh.
The technology minister previously stressed the importance of developing technology-based businesses in Maldives.
Speaking at the demo day of NIRU Accelerator programme hosted by Ooredoo Maldives in March, Minister Maleeh acknowledged that Maldivian youths had launched successful businesses in the technological field. He also noted that the most globally renowned companies of today were technology companies.
Telecom giant Ooredoo had also remarked that Fuvahmulah was rapidly evolving into a flourishing technology hub. The company launched SuperNet Fibre Broadband services in the city during May, making Fuvahmulah the first Gigabit city in Maldives.
