The Maldives government on Thursday awarded projects totalling MVR 244 million to two firms to establish sewerage systems in five of the linked wards of Addu atoll.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy awarded the projects to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) and Sierra Construction of Sri Lanka. Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, MTCC’s CEO Ibrahim Ziyath and Sierra’s Projects Director P.W. Tillakaratne signed the agreements at a special ceremony held in SHE Building in capital Male.
Under the agreement, MTCC is to establish sewerage systems in the wards of Feydhoo, Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo within 15 months. The project includes establishment of a 3,387 ton sewerage treatment plant.
Meanwhile, Sierra will take on the MVR 113 million project of establishing sewerage systems in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, along with a 1,885 ton sewerage treatment plant within 12 months.
Minister Thoriq told reporters after the signing ceremony that while previous governments had attempted but failed to establish sewerage systems in Addu, the current administration will see the project through.
The projects are financed by the government and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
