Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) signed an agreement Sunday with various local airport operators to establish meteorological instrument systems in various airports across the archipelago, financed by free aid from the Japanese government.
MET signed contracts with the heads of six companies at a ceremony held at Ministry of Environment and Energy. The office was represented by Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim.
The companies that entered into agreement with MET are Island Aviation Services (IAS), Regional Airports, Addu International Airport, Pristine Islands Investment, Villa Air and Villa Shipping & Trading Company.
Villa Shipping & Trading Company operates Villa International Airport in the island of Maamigili in Alif Dhaal atoll while Villa Air operates the domestic Kaadehdhoo Airport in Gaafu Dhaal atoll. Meanwhile, Pristine Islands manages the domestic Kooddoo Airport in Gaafu Alif atoll.
Speaking after the signing, Minister Thoriq stated that the project will be funded with the free aid provided by the Japanese government. Meteorological systems are to be established in eleven airports across the Maldives.
The minister added that they are working to develop the meteorological sector of the Maldives to one that is internationally recognised.
