COVID-19: Maldives records 63rd fatality

Health Protection Agency (HPA), on Saturday, announced the 63rd COVID-19 related death in Maldives.

As per the agency, an 67-year-old local male, brought to the Emergency Room of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) was declared dead at 0600 hrs.

This marks the 56th local to have succumbed to the virus in Maldives. The remaining fatalities consist of seven expatriates, including six Bangladeshi nationals and one Filipino citizen.

Currently, the island nation records a total of 20,144 virus cases of which 2,605 are active cases, in addition to 17,470 recoveries and 63 deaths.

After a long period of recording low numbers towards the end of 2020, Maldives is now experiencing its third wave of pandemic, with the introduction of the United Kingdom’s highly contagious virus variant.

With the sudden spike in numbers, HPA introduced a new curfew, which prohibits civilians from roads and public spaces between 2300 to 0430 hrs, while vehicle movements are banned between 1800 to 0600 hrs.
