The Japanese government has decided to donate COVID-19 vaccines to Maldives under the COVAX facility.
Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said that the Japanese government had decided to donate 11 million doses of vaccines to 10 countries, in which Maldives was included.
However, it is unclear how many vaccine doses Maldives will be receiving from Japan yet.
Thanking Foreign Minister of Japan Toshimitsu Moteg and the people of Japan, Minister Shahid said that this was "A true testament to our close relationship!"
China and India has also donated vaccines to Maldives under COVAX facility. All the vaccines Maldives has received so far is through donations from foreign countries.
Despite the fact the Maldivian government has ordered for vaccines, they have not yet reached the nation.
Maldives is currently using India's Covishield and China's Sinopharm and USA's Pfizer vaccine.
While 318,756 people have received one COVID-19 vaccine dose, 235,615 people have received two doses.
