A Qatar firm has commenced development of the Maldives’ largest guesthouse in the island of Dhiffushi in Kaafu atoll.

A Dhiffushi island councilor Ibrahim Mubassir, told Mihaaru that the ten-storey guesthouse is being constructed in a private land plot on the southern side of the island, situated approximately 25 feet from the beach. The plot had been leased to a local company which had awarded the project to the Qatar firm.

Mubassir stated that the project commenced two-three days back with pre-construction preparations now underway.

“According to the blueprint submitted to us, [the guesthouse] will have ten storeys.”

Dhiffushi currently features seven guesthouses which, the island council says, have consistent high occupancy rates. Thus, the council expressed hopes for increased tourist arrivals to the island with the completion of the new guesthouse.

State regulations on guesthouses state that lodges must feature minimum three rooms and six beds. While a maximum amount has not been determined, residences with minimum 25 rooms and 50 beds are authorised to operate as hotels. However, Mihaaru understands that the new project in Dhiffushi is a guesthouse instead of a hotel.

With an average of 10 rooms in guesthouses operated across the Maldives, the new guesthouse being developed in Dhiffushi will be the largest in the archipelago.
