Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid departed to the United States late Monday.

The official visit is in response to the invitation of US Secretary of State, Michael Richard Pompeo.

This is the first instance where a Maldivian minister was invited to the US by the US Secretary of State.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Shahid is set to meet with Secretary Pompeo and other senior officials of the US government, including US Department of State, National Security Council, Office of the US Trade Representative, USAID and Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) in Washington DC.

During this visit, the foreign minister will look into the possibilities of strengthening the existing close ties with US.

After concluding the visit to the United States, he will travel to Geneva from February 25-27 to attend the High-Level Segment of the 40th Session of the UN Human Rights Council.

Afterwards, Minister Shahid is to attend the 46th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Dubai after.

Minister Shahid is accompanied by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and other officials from the foreign ministry.
