President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday extended the work from home duration for the Greater Male Area.

Hence, all the government offices in Malé, Hulhumalé, Villingili, Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu will remain closed from May 15 till 22.

These measures were put in place to curb the recent spike in COVID-19 positive cases in the country.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has strengthened and applied additional measures such as extending curfew hours and travel restrictions.

The announcement by President's Office noted that despite working from home, all essential services would continue without interruptions by allowing a limited number of employees to work at offices. Additionally, it was stated that a minister or head of respective office or authority should authorise any exceptions to this.

Furthermore, the announcement stated that all possible public services will be provided online.

With an additional 1,216 people that tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, the confirmed cases of COVID in Maldives have reached 41,308.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that although the state institutions will be closed the next week, these were not government holidays.

He also stressed the importance of adhering to the instructions of HPA in order to contain the spread of the virus.

Thursday is Fitr Eid. Occasionally, the government will increase the government holidays if the holidays fall in the middle of the week. However, the usual three-day break fell into the weekend this year.
