Leading global Islamic scholar Dr Mufti Ismail Menk pledged his aid in curbing religious extremism in the Maldives on Saturday.

According to the Ministry of Defence, Mufti Menk assured his assistance during his meeting with Defence Minister Adam Shareef when they discussed the issue of religious extremism.

Mufti Menk had arrived in the Maldives last Friday to give a lecture in an “Ilm Talks” session organised by private organisation Jamiyyathu Rahma to raise Islamic awareness among the youth and community. Mufti Menk gave the Friday prayer sermon at the Islamic Centre and a religious lecture at Al-Furqan Mosque that day.

Born Ismail ibn Musa Menk in Zimbabwe, the Islamic cleric is the head of his country’s Fatwa Department. Mufti Menk has received much fame and love across the world for his lectures and fatwas, and enjoyed great support from the Maldivian audience last year when he arrived in the archipelago to deliver a lecture on various issues of society.
