In an effort to relocate garages and workshops in Malé to safer locations, 23 plots of land in Hulhumalé have been opened for lease.

Hulhumalé Development Corporation (HDC) said in an announcement that 23 plots of land will be leased to those who currently operate garages in Malé.

Interested applicants should submit their applications before 10 January, 2023.

Along with the announcement, HDC has also issued guidelines on how garages and workshops can be operated on the land. Some of the key information highlighted in the guidelines include:

- Designs of the garage or workshop must be submitted to HDC and building permits must be obtained prior to construction

- The land cannot be used for any purpose other than running a garage or workshop

- Vehicles of employees working in the garage and vehicles taken for repairs must be parked on the leased land

- The building must have a fire safety system recognised by the Ministry of Defence.

The land for the garages and workshops is given from the industrial area of Hulhumalé. It is located on the vacant land east of the Hulhumalé Power Station.

According to the guidelines provided by HDC, each lease will have an average of 1,000 square-feet of land. Some plots allotted for lease range from 2,000 to 5,000 square-feet.

The buildings can be constructed up to two stories high.

The rent fee for the land was not mentioned in the announcement.

The government decided to lease land to relocate garages in Malé to Hulhumalé after the recent fire incident in Nirufehige which took the lives of 10 expatriate workers.
