Student protests ongoing in Bangladesh have become heated, with six deaths reported yesterday. Reports indicate that over 100 others were injured during the protests.
An official from the Foreign Ministry confirmed to Mihaaru News today that no Maldivians living in Bangladesh have been harmed in any way during these protests. He said that the situation of Maldivians in Bangladesh was being closely monitored through the High Commission of Maldives in Bangladesh.
"We are closely monitoring the situation of Maldivian students in Bangladesh through the Maldives High Commission in Bangladesh, and are providing all required information and assistance," the official said.
With protests against policies for employing persons to civil service positions becoming heated, the government of Bangladesh has temporarily shut down schools, Islamic education institutes, as well as vocational education institutes.
Three of the deaths yesterday were at the Chittagong area. Hospitals have said that there are bullet marks on their bodies. In addition to this, 35 persons were injured in this area.
Two other deaths occurred in Dhaka. The sixth death was caused by a head injury in a violent altercation between protestors and pro-government students in Dhaka. Police also told AFP that 60 others had sustained injuries.
