Two more arrested over Villingili bank heist

Two more people have been arrested in connection with the robbery at the Bank of Maldives (BML) branch in Villingilli, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

Previously, 11 people were previously arrested for the bank robbery. was that was held on November 17.

Three Maldivians and a Bangladeshi worker were the latest four people arrested.

While Police has increased the retention period for the previously arrested suspects, the last four people are remanded for a period of 10 days.

Local media reports that the suspects include four individuals from one family and three from another, along with a Sri Lankan national. The latter is employed at a workshop and, according to reports, the police have also arrested the workshop's owner in relation to the case.

Spokesperson for Police revealed that they had gained a court order before the arresting the additional couple on Tuesday. The police have given a sentence of 7 days for their detention.

Although the police did not reveal the exact amount stolen, they declared that MVR 14 million was recovered from the heist.
