The Elections Commission (EC) has revealed that two new lawmakers will be allocated for constituencies in capital Male for the upcoming 2019 parliament elections.
With this addition, the total number of lawmakers will increase to 87 MPs. According to EC, this decision was made due to the increasing population of Male'.
For a population of 5,000 or less, two MP's will be assigned and for each additional 5,000 people, another lawmaker will be assigned for that constituency.
With this amendment to the constituencies in the Maldives, there will be 15 lawmakers dedicated to Male' which has reached a population of approximately 70,900 people.
EC reports that Male' is the only constituency to experience such a rapid increase in its population.
The constitution states that 150 days prior to the parliament term end, the Election Commission must present a final report for the electoral constituencies.
