Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded projects today to construct new hospital buildings in three islands.

The three islands where the new hospitals will be built in are Raa atoll Alifushi, Noonu atoll Manadhoo and Meemu atoll Muli.

Ministry of Health said that the construction of these new buildings for the hospitals would bring a solution to the space constraints faced by medical facilities currently operating in these islands. They further said that this would allow for the expansion of services provided at these facilities, and provide convenience for residents from nearby islands as well to seek medical services at these facilities.

The hospitals in Manadhoo and Muli are planned to be of 50 bed capacity. The contract gives a two year period for completion at a cost of MVR 185 million.

The hospital in Alifushi is planned to be of 30 bed capacity. This hospital will be built at the cost of MVR 128 million, with the project slated for completion within a period of 730 days.

The ministry further informed that these hospitals will include flu clinics and isolation facilities as a guarantee that they can continue operations even in the instance that a situation like that of the Covid-19 pandemic arises again.

The hospitals will also each contain solar PV systems to bring down energy costs.

Each bed in the hospital will be provided with piped oxygen and medical air and suction facilities.
