EC member Nashath approved for another term

The parliament has approved the appointment of Elections Commission (EC) member Ali Nashath for another term in the commission.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih forwarded Nashath's name for reappointment to the commission earlier in May.

The Independent Commissions Committee approved his reappointment in October after conducting an interview with Nashath, followed by seeking public opinion.

Parliament approved his reappointment as per the committee's decision during Wednesday's sitting, November 15, with the majority of the 42 members present voting in favour. Nine members present at the sitting voted against his reappointment.

Nashath, who was first appointed to the commission in 2018 under the previous administration, completed his term in the office in July 2023.

The presidential election this year, which was scheduled for September, had to be conducted with four out of the total five members active in the commission which included EC's President Fuad Thaufeeq, Deputy Ismail Habeeb, Dr. Mohamed Zahir and Mohamed Asif.

Prior to the presidential election, the members of EC fell into dispute leading to interruption to the commission's work. However, the commission had said it resolved the conflicts ahead of the first round of the election in September.
