Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Sunday announced a third COVID-19 related fatality.

As per the agency, the victim was an 83-year-old Maldivian male. He was admitted to the Hulhumale Medical Facility and was declared dead at 1519hrs.

This marks the 97th COVID-19 death in Maldives.

Earlier in the day, HPA revealed that two Maldivians, an 81-year-old male and a 30-year-old female passed away.

Notably, the 30-year-old was the youngest fatality recorded in the country.

The ongoing surge of COVID-19 positives has vastly increased the death rate, with 23 people passing away to date in May alone.

Authorities have tightened measure to curb the spread. This includes increased duration and extended curfew in addition to travel restrictions.

Maldives recorded its first COVID related death on April 29, 2020.
