President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Wednesday that when reviewing the history of the Maldives, true political freedom was achieved within the past five years.

During the 58th Independence Day celebrations President Solih expressed that the past five years have been marked by a meaningful sense of freedom, evident throughout the Maldives.

"In these five years, Maldives has safeguarded its political freedom in its entirety," the President said.

"The past five years witnessed the broadest enjoyment of civil liberties, and individuals' personal freedom has been ensured without any restrictions."

President Solih said that the true joy of freedom comes from one's personal freedom. He highlighted that while a country may remain free, the freedom experienced by its citizens living under the national flag is entirely different. He attributed this distinction to the state's commitment to providing every citizen with access to basic and essential needs associated with the right to life and livelihood.

As the nation celebrates Independence Day, President Solih emphasized the importance of contemplating the future we aspire to create for tomorrow.

President Solih stated that the destination Maldivians aspire to achieve is 21st-century development, but the current circumstances in which Maldivians have to live are hindering their progress.

"God willing, within the past five years, we have made it our goal to improve our circumstances and set Maldivians on the path of development."
