President's Office announced that July 28 will be a public holiday as previously stated, which falls on a Thursday following two public holidays for Independence Day.
On July 26th 1965, an agreement was signed by the Maldives' Prime Minister and the British Ambassador which ended protectorate treaty between the two countries, absolving the British of their responsibility for the defence and external affairs of the Maldives. Independence Day is celebrated on July 26 every year for this reason, with July 27 being a public holiday in celebration as well.
However, this year, the two days closed to celebrate Maldives' independence falls on a Tuesday and Wednesday. As Thursday is the lone working day before the weekend - which starts on Friday in Maldives - the government have announced that Thursday will also be a public holiday. This means, including the weekend, public offices will be closed from July 26, Tuesday, to July 30, Saturday.
Government offices will then reopen on Sunday, July 31.
A special parade will be held on July 26 to celebrate Independence Day, resumed after halting two years ago for the pandemic.
