The Ministry of Home Affairs has said they will investigate whether there was police negligence in the suicide of Aboobakuru Faisal, who died while receiving treatment for injuries sustained in a suicide attempt.

The victim was arrested on 11 December, on suspicion of murdering his wife in Haa Dhaalu atoll, Nolhivaram. He was remanded for 15-days and attempted to commit suicide while in custody at the police station on the night of 12 December.

Many people have criticized the Police of negligence in the matter.

Faisal died this morning after six days on a ventilator.

Home Ministry Communications Director Hafsy Abdulla told Mihaaru that the investigation into Faisal's death will carry on.

"They will check whether the cell was safe and investigate how Faisal had tried to commit suicide," he said.

A case has been filed in the Parliament to investigate police negligence.

The petition, filed by opposition People's National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group leader and Maduvvaree MP Adam Shareef, said it was the responsibility of the police to monitor those arrested on criminal charges.

He said it was a serious negligence for the police not to know when such a dangerous incident occurred while he was in police custody.
