The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to give the party ticket to former Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) CEO Adam Azim without a primary for the post of Malé City Mayor due to the absence of a rival contender.

MDP stated that it had decided to award tickets to those who contested without a primary, as only one candidate from each constituency had applied during the opening period. Azim is the only candidate running for the post of Malé City Mayor, and he too has received the party's ticket without a primary.

Others who received the tickets:

- Central Henveiru Constituency: Ahmed Rishwan Rasheed – Henveiru Waymouth / Malé

- Henveiru South Constituency: Hawwa Nihla – Henveiru Thaaraboozuge / Malé

- Maafannu South Constituency: Ahmed Imran – Maafannu Falhumatheege / Malé

The Mayor's seat fell vacant last month after Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took the oath of office as the President of Maldives following his victory in the presidential election.

Azim had earlier expressed his intention to run for mayor, citing the need to address various challenges faced by the people of Malé. He emphasized his commitment to resolving existing issues and making the city a better place to live during his tenure as Mayor.

The Elections Commission has decided to conduct a by-election on January 13 to elect a new candidate for the mayoral seat.

Several other individuals have expressed interest in contesting for the position of Malé City Mayor. Among them are Mohamed Saaif Fathih, who currently serves as a City Councilor, former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor, and former Police Commissioner Hussain Waheed.
